I am a tiny bit of an 80s girl, a 90s girl all the way, and a bit of a 00's girl.
It all goes with when I was born of course. I think half the reason I like 80s fashion and music is because I know I was born during that time (although in 1987; I was barely old enough to remember anything when the 90's came around). In fact, I don't have any memories of the 80s. Maybe one, but it's just a moment I remember - nothing before, nothing after. I do remember, however, coveting the 80s fashion when they carried into the 90s - I was old enough to notice and go "I want to wear that when I'm older." I believe this is almost the sole reason that I find 80s fashion somewhere and want to buy it - because I've always wanted that particular item of clothing.
Most of my earliest memories (and I have quite a lot of them) came in 1990 - the first year of another decade, and the year my brother was born. I LOVE 90s TV and music and fashion and fads and movies. Some of the things that made up my childhood are:
Full House (I know we watched this in reruns because I always seemed to be DJ's age, but I'm actually 10 years younger)
Sabrina The Teenage Witch
Arthur (I still watch this whenever it's on TV! Arthur is one of the great kids' shows that you never get too old for. I've never heard anyone say they were over it or too old for it)
The Baby-Sitters Club books (this includes the TV show and movies, although to a lesser degree)
Sweet Valley High books (I don't think the TV show was ever on our screens in Australia)
The Spice Girls
Malory Towers books
The Lion King
Titanic (I was only JUST old enough to watch it when it came out...)
You may wonder about some things that are missing off this list, especially TV shows, movies and music. A lot of 90s TV shows that american kids grew up with simply didn't show here (such as Salute My Shorts). I only put stuff that seemed to dominate my decade (I know I watched The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air but I didn't like it as much as the one's I've listed. Third, some shows were more part of my adolesence (starting in the 90s and ending in the 00s), and some were simply to old for me (Friends is one of my favorite shows but I was 7 when it started - way to young to watch it!!). And I was way more into books as a kid than movies - I barely watched any movies. I only started getting into movies when I was a teenager. And music is a bit iffy, a lot of artists that I liked were big in the 1999/2000 era (The Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears etc), so I don't know what to categorise them as.
I am in the unusual position of having my adolesence in a different decade (not to mention a different century AND millenium!) than my childhood. I turned 13 in February of 2000. It's also the year I became a Christian, so the two eras are defined very differently for me.
Im not a big fan of 2000s music (at least not after '04) because I think all the music turned into all being about sex and drugs and swearing. Granted, I know every era has songs like that, but they've hit a new level in the past 10 years. At least some of our "bad" songs were disguised (can anyone say The Macarena?).
My adolescence was made up of
The Backstreet Boys
Social media didn't exist until I was out of high school. In fact, Facebook was invented the same year I graduated, although it wasn't a thing until '07 here - and I was one of the first of my friends on it.
What decade did you grow up in? What do you remember?
